The Perianesthesia Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a clinical leader for the adult nursing departments at UCSF Medical Center. Department Description
The Institute for Nursing Excellence (INEx) is a Nursing support department with three main arms: Education, Practice, and Research.
The Education arm is made up of Clinical Nurse Educators who oversee the training and education needs for the Department of Nursing.
The Practice arm is made up Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Practice Specialists who oversee practice elements for the Department of Nursing.
The Clinical Inquiry arm oversees the process for clinical inquiry (quality improvement, evidence based practice, research, and innovation).
The mission of INEx is to prepare, support, and sustain skill acquisition, life-long learning, and clinical inquiry that promotes excellence in patient and family care and the vision is to enhance, innovate, and create the best clinical practice, education and training, and clinical inquiry at the point of care.
Job Summary
The Adult Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a clinical leader for the Adult Critical Care areas at UCSF Medical Center. The advanced knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in a focus area, evidence-based practice and research, education, consultation, and leadership. These competencies are essential to advance the practice of nursing and the professional development of nurses. The specialized knowledge and skills are used within three major areas of focus: patient/family, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization/system.
The Adult Critical Care CNS utilizes specialized knowledge and skills within major areas of focus, such as patient / family, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization / system and works collaboratively with the other CNSs and coordinates standard work across the clinical sites. Partners with the nurse managers, physicians, and others in nursing clinical practice areas. This is the journey level for an advanced practice clinical nurse specialist.
Required Qualifications
• Minimum five years of recent clinical RN experience in the specialty area
• Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
• Active American Heart Association CPR certification
• Active American Heart Association ACLS certification
• Current CA CNS license
• Specialty nursing certification relating to patient population required within one year of hire
• Master's degree from an accredited Nursing program
• The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

Functioning in the three spheres of influence (patient care, nurse/nursing practice, organization/system) the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is the clinical leader for a program or area of nursing practice (Critical Care). Population served is based on their education, experience and certification.

The CNS coordinates and guides clinical practice activities/projects of nurses within a practice area. The CNS is accountable for collaborating with members of the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies. The CNS is responsible for maintaining current professional knowledge and competencies and contributing to the advancement of nursing practice at the unit/system, local, state, national, and/or international level.
The qualified candidate will possess the following:
• Graduate degree (master's or doctorate) in nursing with a clinical focus from an accredited school as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
• Current Certification as a CNS.
• Valid State of WI (or eNLC State) RN License.
• BLS (CPR) Certification.
• At least 3 years, within the past 5 years, of experience in critical care nursing.
• Demonstrated skills at the level of an advanced practice nurse in direct patient care, consultation, systems leadership, collaboration, coaching, research, ethical decision making/moral agency/advocacy, and informatics.
• Demonstrated ability at the level of an advanced practice nurse to utilize evidence to develop, teach, guide, and implement practice standards and policies.
