Summary

This Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) position is in the Labor & Delivery department, Maternal Infant Services at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. The CNS is a masters or doctoral prepared nurse who applies clinical expertise in evidence-based nursing practice within a specialty area and functions in the following roles: clinical expert, educator, researcher and consultant. The ability to be a system thinker and change agent are role assumptions for the CNS. The CNS serves three primary clients: patient/family, nursing staff and organization.

Clinical Nurse Specialist positions with Sharp HealthCare focus on patient outcomes and serve a key function to the organization. There are opportunities for Clinical Nurse Specialists to collaborate with leaders throughout Sharp to create safer systems and processes for patients and their families.

The CNS will be part of the Women’s Administration department at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. The Maternal Infant Services department at Sharp Chula Vista Medical delivers 250-300 infants/month. The department is comprised of an 8-bed triage, 10-bed LDR suite, 19-bed Post-Partum unit, 2 OR suites, 3-bed PAU and a 9-bed Level II NICU.

Position Summary:

The Infection Prevention and Control clinical nurse specialist (IPC CNS) will be responsible for the assessment of adult patients with conditions which place them at increased risk of infection and implementing risk reduction measures. These patients have multiple medical co-morbidities or are receiving intensive or step down level of care, and are colonized with pathogens such as S. aureus and C. difficile or have an invasive devices which places them at increased risk of subsequent infection, such as a central venous catheter, urinary catheter or other device. The IPC CNS will primarily report to the chief hospital epidemiologist, but will collaborate with the hospital epidemiologist and associate hospital epidemiologist for the NYULMC Main Campus and associate hospital epidemiologist for the NYUL Brooklyn Campus. This position will see inpatients on the main and Brooklyn campuses.

Job Responsibilities:

Assess patients colonized with methicillin susceptible or methicillin resistant S. aureus. If indicated, implement IPC protocols which include the use of antiseptics and/or antibiotics to minimize risk of subsequent infection. Collaborate with the primary licensed independent practitioners and nursing to coordinate care
Assess patients colonized with C. difficile who are receiving antibiotics or have other risk factors for subsequent infection. If indicated, implement IPC protocols which may include the use of antimicrobials or probiotics to minimize risk of subsequent infection. Collaborate with the primary licensed independent practitioners and nursing to coordinate care
Assess patients with a central venous catheter who meet criteria for increased risk of subsequent central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI). If appropriate, implement antibiotic lock or heparin lock therapy to minimize risk of subsequent infection. Collaborate with the primary licensed independent practitioners and nursing to coordinate care
Assess patients with a urinary catheter who meet criteria for increased risk of subsequent catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Collaborate with the primary licensed independent practitioners and nursing to reduce risk of infection.
Review IPC data to identify patients who may benefit from these infection prevention protocols; ensure appropriate screening and laboratory tests are ordered if missing.
Provide education to patients, family and staff for the patients under the care of the IPC CNS
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties
Perform other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications:

BS in Nursing with current licensure by New York State as a Registered Nurse. Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing (MSN) or an equivalent degree. At least one year of experience with direct patient care. Possess outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, professional demeanor and demonstrated ability to coordinate patient care and educate patients, family and staff.
